PC Admires Security, Intelligence Agencies for Nabbing Pune Blast Suspect

Pune German Bakery blast suspect Abdul Samad Bhatkal has today been produced in a Malegaon sessions court, said media reports.

Bhatkal, one of the prime suspects of the blast that occurred on February 13 and left 17 dead and over 60 injured, was taken into custody soon after his arrival from Dubai.

He is a close relative of Riyaz Ahmed Bhatkal, a key member of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and another prime suspect in the Pune blast. Both of them are also suspected of their involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks.

Issuing a statement in the morning, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram admired the efforts of security and intelligence agencies for nabbing Bhatkal, reports said.

“I compliment ATS Maharashtra, the Pune Police, the central agencies for apprehending the prime suspect within 100 days of the incident,” the minister was quoted as saying.

“The ATS of Maharashtra with assistance of Pune Police, were able to identify the prime suspect behind the bomb blast,” he was quoted as saying.

Bhatkal is the first high-profile arrest that the ATS has made in connection with the blast.

Reports said that his name figured when investigators were reviewing closed-circuit television camera footage of the German Bakery in which a man in his mid-20 s was seen walking into the bakery with two bags but leaving with just one.

Subsequently, lookout notice was served for Bhatkal for his alleged involvement in the blast.

He was on board Air India flight XI 812 and was noticed by immigration officials, who alerted security agencies.

Officials then whisked Bhatkal away to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
