Summer capital of J&K starting today

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was accorded Guard of Honour by a police band at the Civil Secretariat. The Civil secretariat, the seat of Jammu and Kashmir government, today re-opened in the summer capital Srinagar amid tight security after six months of its functioning in Jammu as part of the bi-annual ‘Darbar’ move.

The offices which have shifted to Srinagar include Raj Bhavan and police headquarters.

The CM later also chaired a meeting of administrative secretaries and urged them to work for mitigating the problems of the people and expedite the development works in the Valley.

The Civil Secretariat and other ‘move offices’ closed in Jammu on April 29. It will close here in late October and reopen in Jammu, the winter capital of the state, in the first week of November.

The practice to shift the base of the government was started by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1872 to escape the extreme weather conditions in Jammu and Srinagar.
