Strengthening Ties with Neighbours New Govt’s Top Priority: Krishna

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has said that the new government’s top priority on external affairs front is to reinforce ties with neighbouring countries and to further consolidate strategic partnerships with the US, Russia, China, Japan and the European Union.

Krishna, who was interacting for the first time after taking charge, maintained that the country’s Look East policy would continue and at the same time there would be an equal emphasis on nurturing close ties with its traditional partners with the aim of furthering India’s non-aligned foreign policy and strengthening its strategic autonomy.

The minister reaffirmed that traditional ties with countries in Africa, West Asia and Latin America would also be furthered..

Reading from a prepared text, Krishna pointed out that in a rapidly changing world situation, India, as a responsible power, needed to engage actively with the world. “I am deeply conscious of the opportunities available to us and the difficulties that we face as we continue to pursue our independent foreign policy of peace and development, and strengthen our strategic autonomy,” he observed.

His endeavour would be to further advance the country’s interests in the international arena.
