Pak Not to Act against Saeed on Hearsay; India Smells Vested Interest

Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that his country cannot take action against outlawed JuD chief Hafiz Saeed on the basis of “hearsay” and needs more time to assess the genuineness of information provided by India on him.

In the meanwhile, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has said that Pakistan has a vested interest in blocking the inquiry into the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and is safeguarding terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

“India gave us the latest evidence (on Saeed) only 10 days back and we need a few days to evaluate its veracity and also whether it can take the test of our courts. We cannot operate on hearsay alone,” Malik said in an interview to ‘The News’ daily.

Nevertheless, authorities in the Indian High Commission said that India handed last dossier on evidence of Mumbai terror attacks on August 21. Since then, no further information has been provided by India, they said.

Talking to ‘Headlines Today’, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said that Pakistan has a vested interest in blocking the inquiry into the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and is safeguarding terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

“It’s an orchestrated voice emanating from Pakistan. They have a vested interest in safeguarding Hafiz Saeed. We have no doubt that Saeed is the brain behind the 26/11 attacks and have evidence to prove it,” Krishna said.

Krishna, who will meet his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi at the UN General Assembly in New York later this month, said that terrorism would remain his focus during the meeting.

“We are continuously engaging Pakistan on terrorism although we may not be talking to each other on other issues,” he said.
