On Cleric‘s Appeal, Omar Holds Meeting to Lift Curfew

Following an appeal by religious leaders, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a high level meeting today to consider temporarily lifting curfew in Srinagar, said media reports.

Religious cleric Mufti Azam had appealed to the state government for relaxation of curfew to perform Shab- e-Meraj, which will be observed tonight. Special prayers are offered for Shab-e-Meraj.

He also appealed to the people to carry out religious duties peacefully.

According to reports, the state government would relax curfew only if the security situation allows.

In the meantime, all curfew passes have been restored to members of local media.

Srinagar has been under curfew for last three days in the wake of violence which erupted after dead body of youth was found.

Army has been deployed in the restive valley to maintain law and order.

Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that he hopes the Army will ‘not have to stay very long’.
