Mulayam: Congress alliance will happen

In the midst if what seems to be a hectic political-marriage season, Samawadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh on Monday said his party is ready to work out the fine print of an alliance his party seeks with the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections,

Singh’s statement came a day after the Congress inked an alliance with the Trinamiil Congress in West Bengal on Sunday.

Responding to queries after a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi, Singh said the talks were positive and the alliance was on the cards.

Samajwadi Party and Trinamool are natural Congress allies as the two parties face massive challenges in their respective home grounds from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Left parties who are in a pivotal role in the formation of the Third Front.

Congress has reiterated that it would prefer to contest at least 25 seats in UP and expressed hope that a consensus would soon be reached with the SP, which has repeatedly refused to part with more than 17 seats.
