MRPS overshadows Sonia’s Hyderabad visit

Humiliating the government, protesting activists of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) concertedly sabotaged a rally being addressed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Hyderabad on Saturday, minutes after some other activists attempted to set the state Congress unit office on fire.

Four MRPS activists, sustained burns while trying to set Gandhi Bhavan – the PCC office – ablaze.

Agitating MRPS activists that have been indulging in acts of arson across the state to press for their demand for SCs categorisation which would ensure them more jobs and reservations in educational institutions, pulled off the audacious two pronged attack to coincide with Sonia Gandhi’s speech.

Half a dozen MRPS activists slipped into Gandhi Bhavan at around 1800 hours and before police personnel could react, the protesters ran towards the PCC president’s chamber.

As a scuffle broke out between the security personnel and activists one of them threw kerosene on the floor in the reception area and started a fire. The place was soon engulfed in flames, four MRPS activists, a security personnel and at least one Congress worker suffered burns.

While two MRPS activis managed to flee, the injured were admitted to hospital and a fire tender doused the fire.

While the fire trouble was still on at the PCC, a dozen women activists of the MRPS started to raise anti-government slogans as soon as Sonia Gandhi began her speech at the Parade Grounds.

Police had a tough time removing the activists from the venue, which could only be done around the time Gandhi concluded her speech.

While the Congress leadership in Andhra Pradesh is fuming over the ignominy, hospital sources say the four MRPS activists P Surender Madiga, Damodar, Jairam, and Mahesh are in critical condition.
