Breaking a zillion hearts, tennis ace Sania Mirza exchanged rings with childhood friend and Hyderabad businessman Sohrab Mirza at a simple and private engagement ceremony at a city hotel on Friday.
The ceremony, a painfully private affair, was held amid tight security and was attended by a select group of relatives and close friends of the two families.
On the guest list were badminton player P Gopichand, Union Minister of State for Human Resource D Purandareswari, her husband and legislator D Venkateshawara Rao, Telugu film actor Vishnu and industrialist GVK Reddy.
Elaborate security arrangements were in place at the venue as the ceremony was held in the backdrop of the arrest of two youths, who trespassed the Mirza house during the last two days, the men had claimed that they were in love with the Hyderabadi beauty and appealed to her parents to cancel the engagement.
The media was barred from the venue and several television crews were seen hovering around the gates to catch a glimpse of the star, who has figured on every bachelor’s wishlist in the country, since her debut on the circuit.
Sania reached the hotel accompanied by her immediate family at around 1800 hours.
Earlier in the day, Sania’s father, Imran Mirza requested the media to respect their privacy and termed the engagement as a “simple and private affair.”
