Maoist Killed in WB Gunfight

A Maoist rebel was killed when security personnel, attempting to rescue a teacher kidnapped from neighbouring Bankura district, were fired upon by ultras in a forest near Lalgarh in West Midnapore district on Sunday, said reports citing police sources.

The rebel was identified as Gurcharan Hembram.

The incident took place when the rescue team, acting on a tip-off, surrounded the Maoists at Goaltore, added the reports.

Maoist rebels are demanding the release of six of their cadre arrested following the killing of Sarenga police station in-charge Rabi Lochan Mitra on February 25.

The Maoists had abducted school teacher – Ranjit Duley – from Barulia Madhyamik Siksha Kendra in Sarenga area on March 5 at gun-point.
