Man Quizzed in Kingfisher Crude Bomb Case Commits Suicide

The man, who was quizzed in connection with the crud bomb found on a Kingfisher flight last month, has committed suicide, said media reports.

Sunil Lawrence, a cleaner at the Thiruvananthapuram airport, mentioned in a suicide note that he decided to kill himself as he couldn’t prove his innocence, said reports.

He alleged that his interrogation and detention in the case cost him a job opportunity in the Middle East, reports said.

Last month, a crude bomb was found in the cargo section of a Kingfisher plane that had flown from Bangalore to Thiruvanthapuram.

The bomb, wrapped in a Malayalam newspaper, was discovered during a routine check after passengers alighted.

The crude bomb exposed a series of security lapses. Among them: how did the flight take off without the package being detected? Another major concern: that the package could not be traced to a passenger or to a courier company.

After the incident, new guidelines have been introduced which mandate that the names and addresses of senders of all couriered packages have to be verified.

The Kingfisher incident was investigated by police officials from both Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.

Passengers on the flight and airport staff in both cities were questioned.
