Lal Chowk Back to Normalcy; Shops, Transport Facilities Reopen in Srinagar
Normalcy has returned to Lal Chowk, the heart of Srinagar, after the government’s assurance that the CRPF bunker in the area will be shifted, said reports.
On January 6, two militants laid siege to the area after they took shelter in Punjab Hotel and opened fire and threw grenades. They were killed in the two-day long encounter. A policeman and a civilian were also killed and eight others injured in the incidence.
‘The Hindu’ reported that the shopkeepers in the area later insisted that the bunker was shifted, for they think that it attracts militant attacks. They kept their shops closed for four days.
Minister of State Nasir Aslam Wani on Sunday held meeting with trader community and assured them that the bunker would be removed following which they agreed to reopen the shops, the report said.
Lal Chowk and other areas of the city on Monday commenced the day as usual. Offices and banks were open and transport facilities normal. Despite cold, the sunshine in Srinagar has made the atmosphere pleasant, said report.
