Lease Cancellation if Public Schools Fail to Give 15% Seats to Poor Students

The central government has said that the public schools failing to give reserved 15% seats to poor students might face cancellation of their lease.

“We are aware of the Delhi High Court order. It has said that if 15 per cent reservation is not given to poor children by public schools, then their lease will be cancelled,” Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said in Rajya Sabha.

In response to supplementaries during Question Hour, the minister said that the Delhi High Court’s order is not related to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill 2008, which puts aside 25% seats for poor students in public schools.

Sibal said if the provisions in the Bill, passed by Rajya Sabha yesterday, are violated by any public school, their recognition can also be cancelled.
