Judiciary, Not Executive to Blame for Bhopal Mess-up: Moily

Absolving the Centre of the Bhopal gas tragedy mess-up, Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily has instead blamed the judiciary citing it reduced the gas disaster into a truck accident, said media reports.

Criticizing the judiciary for being slow, the minister said that the former Chief Justice of India AH Ahmadi diluted the charges against the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL), reports said.

In the meantime, Justice Ahmadi offered to step down as the Bhopal Memorial Hospital trust chairman saying that he would send his resignation to the CJI after allegations of conflict of interest, said reports.

Blaming judiciary directly for the Bhopal mess-up, Moily said that it is the judiciary and not the executive that is to blame, reports said.

Without mentioning Justice Ahmadi, he alleged that the judiciary was slow and treated the gas disaster like a truck accident, said reports.

Moily said that it’s unfortunate that the court changed the charges from that relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder to 304 A (that of causing death by negligence). Justice Ahmadi was the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, said reports.
