Judicial Probe Ordered into Death of Kashmiri Women

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced a judicial inquiry into mysterious death of two young women in Shopian on Friday, and has promised action. In the wake of violent protests on the issue, Abdullah also replaced the Deputy Commissioner of the district.

It may be mentioned that life in Kashmir valley remained affected on Monday in response to a strike call given by hardline separatist Syed Ali Geelani with the support of militant outfits such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Officials imposed curfew in South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian districts and downtown Srinagar, but the rest of Srinagar saw violent demonstrations. At least two dozen people, defying restrictions, were injured in clashes with police. Protesters raised slogans demanding justice to the victims.

In meanwhile, officials put under house arrest separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah, Naeem Khan and Javid Mir who were planning to lead public protests. Geelani extended the strike call till June 3 saying he had no faith in a government-ordered probe.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced a judicial inquiry by Muzaffar Jan, former Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

In a news conference, Abdullah said that investigations did not confirm that the women were raped or murdered.

“Since we are under public pressure and people will not be satisfied with any of our reports, my government has decided to get the inquiry conducted by Justice Jan,” he said.

A month’s time had been given to him. The government would act on the basis of his report. Mr. Abdullah said the report would be tabled in the Assembly which was likely to begin its budget session in the first week of July.

Abdullah said that the guilty would not be shielded. “There’s no question of shielding anybody. We’ll give exemplary punishment.”
