Jaitley Likely to Be Next BJP Chief

After RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s message to the BJP to set its house in order, there are clear signs of strong interference of Sangh to put to an end the ongoing in-fighting in the party and to force fighting leaders to arrive at a consensus on a new party chief.

According to reports, the message was given strongly to BJP leaders at a meeting which took place on Thursday night. The meeting took place between Bhagwat and BJP leaders Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar.

Media reports suggest that Sangh chief is believed to have hammered out the outline for a succession plan in BJP grappling with intense partisan-politics.

Analysts believe that the very purpose behind calling both Jaitley and Swaraj to a meeting together at the RSS headquarters hold significance. It is assumed that a power-sharing arrangement between the two – who are leading contender for the party leadership – was arrived at, with Swaraj likely to take over from LK Advani as Leader of Opposition and Arun Jaitley from Rajnath Singh as party chief. However, nothing is final, sources said.

If the above arrangement becomes functional,  M Venkaiah Naidu can get new role as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha replacing Jaitley. The RSS is reported to have given obvious instructions that differences should be reconciled and even dissident group should be given space in the party.

The intervention of Sangh has come following pleas by senior BJP leaders in the face of growing in-fighting that if it does not step in at the moment, it might be too late, for things could not be left till Rajnath Singh’s tenure ended later this year.

Besides, the presence of many top leaders of Sangh – Bhaiyaji Joshi, Suresh Soni, Dattatreya Hosbale and Madandas Devi – with Bhagwat in Delhi is also being considered significant.

The BJP leader were instructed not to talk about the two-and-a-half hour meeting that took place at RSS headquarters and that bloodletting for party chief’s post should be ended.

It was also decided that the next party chief would be a consensus candidate of both Singh and Advani. After the meeting, BJP leaders went to Advani’s residence to brief the leader about the parleys.
