IPL to Commence amid Tight Security, Hyderabad Takes on Calcutta

The third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 20-20 cricket tournament, is going to commence today amid tight security in Mumbai, said media reports.

Eight teams are taking part in the event which is overshadowed by security concerns, however, IPL authorities defended the arrangements.

Last season’s winner Hyderabad will be taking on Calcutta in the first of a total of 60 matches to be played in 43-day tournament, said reports.

In just two years, the IPL has turned itself into an established event and has becomes a multi billion dollar industry.

Screens

According to reports, IPL matches will be shown through 650 theatre screens across the country, with some reports even saying that the number might go up to 700, reports said.

Cine-goers will get to watch matches without commercial breaks and also avail of other incentives.

Terror Threat

A news website had published a message reported to be from the 313 Brigade, an operational arm of al-Qaeda, that threatened the IPL, Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup, all of which are being held in India.
