Indian Solicitor General Leaves for US to Discuss Access to Headley

Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam is leaving for Washington today for discussions with the US Justice Department about access to Pakistani-born US national and Lashkar operative David Coleman Headley, who has confessed his involvement in the planning of Mumbai terror attacks, said media reports.

Subramaniam, who is visiting the US within a fortnight of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s US visit, is expected to explore avenues available with India to get access to Headley, reports said.

The visit is more significant in the backdrop of remarks of Headley’s counsel and of US Ambassador Timothy J Roemer that US was working on providing India access to the terror suspect.

Roemer had said that discussions between the US and India on providing New Delhi access to Headley under his plea bargain are still on track and that they would be providing India access to Hedley.

“The US is working at the highest level to provide direct access to Headley. Our government has put this as the highest priority in counter-terror cooperation,” Roemer had said.
