India successfully tests interceptor missile

In continuum of its efforts to establish a two layer ballistic missile defence system, India on Friday successfully test fired an interceptor missile at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) on Wheeler Island off Orissa coast. The test was the second major missile firing conducted by India this week.

The test saw the interceptor render useless a ‘Dhanush’ missile fired from INS Rajput anchored in the Bay of Bengal at 1620 hours Friday, say media reports.

The interception that took place at an altitude of 70-80km, according to experts a safe distance as it minimises risk of nuclear debris and subsequent dangers posed by radiation.

The test is reported to be a part of plans to heighten defences against missiles by deploying a two-layered ballistic missile defence (BMD) system in the country.

India on Wednesday morning successfully tested a 290km land attack variant of the BrahMos missile at a testing range in Pokhran, Rajasthan.
