India ‘Strongly’ Committed to Economic Development of Bangladesh: Tharoor

Claiming considerable progress in bilateral ties after Hasina-led government was voted to power in Bangladesh, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has said that India is ‘strongly’ committed to its eastern neighbour’s economic development, reported PTI.

“India is strongly committed towards Bangladesh’s economic development and the prosperity of their people. We see Bangladesh’s success as an investment in our own security and prosperity,” Tharoor was quoted as saying.

Tharoor is in Shillong on a two-day visit to attend an international seminar on ‘From Landlocked to Landbuilt: North East India in BIMSTEC’ at the North East Hill University.

Speaking about Hasina’s recent visit to India, he said that it ‘marked a new increase in momentum in the friendship between the two countries’, said report.

“We have found there had been tremendous increase not only in the actual co-operation, but also a wonderful improvement in the spirit of cooperation. So in every respect, I would say that the state, the health and the prospect of Indo-Bangladesh relationship have been very good,” he was quoted as saying.

In response to a query what significant gains India got out of the cooperation, he said, “Sometimes, in such relationships it is best not to speak of what one gets and what one gives”
