Hurriyat Strike Affects Life in Valley

Normal life in several parts of the Kashmir valley remained disrupted Monday, as vehicles stayed off the roads and shops and establishments downed shutters during the daylong strike called by hardline Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, to protest the alleged damage caused to 32 houses by security forces during an anti-militant operation in the Chinkipora area of Sopore, said reports.

On February 23, the Army, acting on a tip-off, cordoned off the area and launched house-to-house searches to locate the militants.

The militants opened fire on the search party triggering a full-fledged gun-battle that resulted in the death of four security personnel including an Army officer. Two terrorists were gunned down by the Army.

Geelani has alleged that security forceds damaged the houses during the operation, leaving many homeless.
