High Alert Sounded in Punjab, Sant Rama Nanda To be Laid to Rest Today

Ahead of cremation of spiritual leader Sant Rama Nand of the Dera Sachkhand Ballan sect, the Punjab government sounded a high alert across the state.

A special chartered plane, which left for Vienna a few days ago to bring the body of Sant Rama Nand for cremation, returned in Jalandhar this morning. Sant Rama Nand died in an attack in Vienna.

Keeping in view the sensitivity of the matter, heavy security personnel have been deployed and additional security forces are also placed in.

During plane’s brief stopover in New Delhi, various political leaders paid their last respect to the departed soul.

Dera Sachkhand Ballan chief Niranjan Dass, who was injured in the incident on May 24 also arrived in the same aircraft.

The killing of Sant Ramanand in a shooting incident in Vienna triggered large scale violence in Punjab and demonstrations from the Sikh community across the world. The state witnessed large scale arson and the administration had to impose an indefinite curfew last week.
