Hasina Calls on Patil; Krishna Discusses Connectivity, Trade

India on Monday welcomed Bangladeshi premier Sheikh Hasina as she commenced her four-day official visit during which the two sides are to ink five pacts, three of them security related.

Hasina, who is visiting India for the first time after taking charge last year, was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Bangladeshi prime minister called on President Pratibha Patil and had discussions on a number of bilateral and regional issues.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna also met Hasina and spoke about issues pertaining to connectivity, trade and SAARC.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to hold talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart later in the day. Singh will also host a state banquet in her honour.

The two leaders will discuss sharing of river waters, the resolution of the maritime border dispute and the promotion of bilateral trade and connectivity.

The two neighbours are set to expand their security and counter-terror cooperation by inking treaties on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, mutual transfer of convicted prisoners, and cooperation in the fight against international terrorism, organised crime and illegal drug trafficking.

Hasina will be conferred the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on Tuesday.
