Gunmen Fire at Newspaper Office, Protestors Defy Curfew in Imphal

Unidentified gunmen opened fired at the office of Paojel – an evening daily – in the Manipuri capital of Imphal at around 1950 hours on Thursday, say media reports, citing police officials, appearing on the internet on Friday.

No casualty was reported in the attack, which has not been claimed by any individual or group, so far.

The reports, attributing info to a Paojel spokesperson, said district senior superintendent of police conducted a spot enquiry on the office and said that the newspaper had not received any threat from any quarter.

On Friday, scores of people defied curfew in Imphal east and west districts, the protestors rallied over the killing of a young man in an alleged fake encounter.

Security personnel barricaded the state capital complex to prevent the protestors from gaining entry into the high security area, say media reports.

Effigies of chief minister Ibobi Singh and Director General of Police Y Joykumar were torched at Tera in Imphal west district, where the procession was dispersed by security personnel, they added.
