Gujarat HC Constitutes Panel to Probe Ishrat Encounter

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday constituted a three-member committee to further investigate the ‘encounter’ of Ishrat Jahan in 2004.

The panel, comprising of senior police officers, will review the investigation the shoot-out in which four persons, including Ishrat, were gunned down on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

The city crime branch, then headed by now jailed IPS officer DG Vanzara, had shot down four alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives on an alleged mission to kill chief minister Narendra Modi.

Demanding compensation, Ishrat’s mother filed a petition before the high court in 2004 and claimed that the shoot-out was a fake encounter and that her daughter had falsely been dubbed a terrorist.
