Govt. Should Look into Private Airlines’ Demands: BJP

In the backdrop of the proposed strike by private airlines on August 18, main Opposition BJP on Saturday said that though, it backed all rational measures to bail out Air India, the government should also take a sympathetic view of the problems faced by private aviation companies.

While terming the strike call by the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) as “unfortunate,” former civil aviation minister and BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy affirmed party support to “any rational decision of the government to bail out Air India,” but urged it to “look at the demands of private airlines.”

Lauding the role played by private airlines, Rudy said their contribution to the aviation in the country was significant and had resulted in heightened connectivity, providing choice of service and a substantial downturn in ticket fares.

“Naturally, private airlines also consider themselves as contributors and expect a level-playing field,” he said.

While admitting that the government could not be expected to put private airlines at par with Air India, he claimed that it was guilty of ignoring the aviation sector in the last five years.

Recounting the earlier NDA government’s achievements in the sector, he said that the UPA had avoided far reaching decision had led to a complete disarray of the industry.
