Govt Agrees to Hold Debate on Inflation in LS

Yielding to opposition, the central government has agree on a discussion in the Lok Sabha tomorrow on rising prices, an issue that has united almost entire Opposition with even some of UPA allies being with them, reported PTI.

In a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Lok Sabha presided by Speaker Meira Kumar, it was decided that the discussion would take place on the issue, said report.

It may be mentioned that the Opposition had threatened to move an adjournment motion tomorrow if the government failed to hold a discussion on the issue.

“We have agreed for a short duration discussion and now it is for the Speaker to take a decision,” a minister was quoted as saying.

He noted that generally the Motion of Thanks to the President for her address is taken up first but government agreed to break the convention to discuss the price rise issue, said report.

The decision came after tremendous opposition and Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj meeting the Speaker and telling her their intention to move an adjournment motion on the issue if the government did not discuss the issue tomorrow.

In addition to Swaraj, those who met the Speaker were CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta, Basudeb Acharia (CPI(M)), Lalu Prasad (RJD) and Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), said report.

Also, UPA partners like DMK and Trinamool Congress had demanded full-fledged debate on price rise.
