Geelani under House Arrest, Again

Barely 24 hours after his release from detention at a tourist hut in the high security Cheshmashahi area of the city, hardline secessionist Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest in Srinagar late Thursday evening, say media reports citing police officials on Friday.

Geelani was placed under house arrest in Srinagar as a preventive measure, the officials added.

Geelani, after spending over three months in detention, was released on Wednesday evening after the state high court quashed his detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Geelani addressed a press conference at his residence Thursday afternoon and announced that an agitation will be launched after Eid to protest the allotment of land to the army.

He was later informed of his house arrest by a posse of policemen that surrounded his Hyderpora residence late Thursday.

Geelani had been arrested early June in Srinagar for spearheading the agitation against the rape and murder of Asiya and Neelofar in Shopian.
