Dinesh Karthik and Co left baffled by umpiring decision, Ravichandran Ashwin gets involved

Controversies and drama have taken over the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. After the ‘Mankad’ incident involving Ravichandran Ashwin and Jos Buttler in the Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals match, the Kolkata Knight Riders versus Kings XI Punjab game was hit by a couple of dramatical incidents. While the first one was the no-ball incident in which Andre Russell received a lifeline as there were only three fielders inside the 30-yard circle, the other one was the incident in which the umpire signalled four overthrows to KXIP.

The no-ball incident was quite clear as it was Ashwin’s fault after he failed to manage his fielders. But the second incident left everyone confused. The incident took place in the sixth over of Punjab’s innings when Mayank Agarwal and Sarfaraz Khan were at the crease for the Ashwin-led outfit. KKR bowler Prasidh Krishna banged a short delivery to Agarwal – who defended it and stole a quick single.

Nitish Rana, who was standing at covers, allowed Agarwal the single and threw the ball casually towards Russell, who was standing at mid-on. The Windies all-rounder lost the ball in the lights and the ball ran away towards the fence.

The umpire decided to call it a boundary in overthrows, as KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik along with Robin Uthappa and few others, was left baffled by the decision. Even the commentators reckoned that it shouldn’t have been signalled as four overthrows. Interestingly, Ashwin, who has been under the spotlight since he Mankaded Buttler, was also seen coming out of the dugout and having a word with the match official.

Karthik, Russell, Uthappa, Piyush Chawla and Sunil Narine were seen having a discussion with the on-field umpires after the decision but the umpire’s order stood and five runs were given to KXIP for that particular delivery by Krishna. However, KKR went on to win the match by 28 runs as they sealed their second consecutive win to go atop the IPL 2019 table.
