Floods Recede in K’nataka, Andhra; Toll Rises to 252

The flood situation in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which torrential rains last week and were inundated with water, has started abating even as the death toll rose to 252 with more bodies found.

In past two days, Karnataka saw a let up in rains that rendered respite to the flood victims, large number of whom were now lodged in transit camps.

Three more bodies were found in Karnataka – two from Chikkaballapura district and one from Karwar in Uttara Kannada district – where a landslide had occurred last week, taking the toll to 197, officials said in Bangalore.

In the century’s worst floods, an estimated of 25 lakh houses have either collapsed or devastated by the deluge and more than 18 million people been displaced.
