Five Bajrang Dal Workers Held for Protesting against EU Team Visit to Kandhamal

For protesting against a European Union (EU) delegation visit to Orissa’s Kandhamal district, five Bajrang Dal activists were taken into custody, reported Economic Times.

It may be mentioned that the delegation is schedules to hold interaction with riot victims.

Police said that the Bajrang Dal activists were arrested on Tuesday evening from the airport in Bhubaneshwar, said report.

Shorty after the 11-member EU delegation, which is slated to visit Kandhamal on Thursday, landed in Bhubaneshwari, activists started shouting slogans and the team was whisked away from the airport amidst tight security while the protesters were held, said report.

Report said that the delegation would meet senior state officials on Wednesday before leaving for Kandhamal.

The district had witnessed widespread violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram on Aug 23, 2008.

The VHP, Bajrang Dal has demanded that the visit be scrapped as it could create fresh tension in the region that is now returning to normalcy.
