Fire at Kolkata’s Stephen Court Building
At least two people have died and scores others are still trapped in the raging blaze that erupted at the multi-storey Stephen Court building in Kolkata’s historic Park Street on Tuesday. 30 fire engines operated by nearly 100 fire fighters are battling the blaze even as TMC chief Mamata Banerjee arrived on then scene to take stock of rescue ops.
Accordihng to reports, 15 people have been admitted to hospital with injuries caused by the fire that erupted in an elevator shaft between 1430 and 1445 hours.
The cause behind the fire is not immediately known.
Several people, including an 80-year-old woman have been rescued by the firefighters. Several others used ropes to climb down the building and at least one person sustained grievous wounds when he jumped off one of the higher floors of the building.
The Stephen Court is home to the popular Peter Cat restaurant and Flury’s confectionery.
