Eminent socialist leader and JD(U) leader George Fernandes was administered oath as member of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Fernandes has been elected to the Upper House unopposed in a bye-poll necessitated following JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav’s resignation when he was elected to the Lok Sabha.
Unwell for a long time, Fernandes was helped by JD(U) leader Shivanand Tiwari in taking oath. Chairman Hamid Ansari administered the oath of affirmation.
It may be mentioned that the former defence minister had contested the recent Lok Sabha election as a rebel candidate, after JD(U) denied him ticket for Muzaffarpur constituency.
Several members greeted Fernandes when he came to the house to take oath.
