Dolphin Is India’s National Aquatic Animal

With an aim to save the rare freshwater species from country’s aqua map, the central government has declared dolphins as a national aquatic anima.

While talking to media persons, Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh said that just as tiger is a national animal and peacock as a national bird, government has declared dolphins as a national aquatic animal as it it represents the health of the rivers, particularly Ganga in the country.

He said that decision was taken at the first meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to streamline steps to rejuvenate the river Ganga.

The minister informed that at the meeting Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar proposed naming dolphins as national aquatic animal which the Authority approved.
