Dinakaran Asks for Panel to Probe Allegations against Him

Accused of land grab scam, Karnataka Chief Justice PD Dinakaran wants to defend himself in the alleged case of involvement in the financial fraud.

Dinakaran requested CJI KG Balakrishnan on Tuesday to form a panel comprising of three members for investigation into all allegations leveled against him.

This came after Balakrishnan’s statement that once the probe is underway, Dinakaran cannot officiate court proceedings.

Dinakaran currently faces impeachment after 76 Opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha moved a notice to impeach him.

The MPs on Monday submitted a petition to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari for impeaching Justice Dinakaran.

The Judge has been accused of land-grabbing and amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Dinakaran’s promotion to the Supreme Court has also been put on hold after the Central Government returned the file recommending his promotion. The Supreme Court collegium is yet to take a decision on it.

In independent India, only once has an impeachment motion against a senior judge been put to vote. The motion against Supreme Court Justice V Ramaswamy in 1992-93 was defeated.
