Din over Coal Purchase in K’taka Assembly

Asking for a debate on alleged “financial irregularities” that had taken place in purchase of imported coal, Opposition JD(S) on Tuesday disrupted proceedings in the Karnataka Assembly and forced at least two adjournments.

Revanna took up the issue of the coal import scam as soon as the House assembled in the morning and demanded a thorough debate into the financial irregularities.

Revanna alleged that the chief minister BS Yeddyurappa was directly involved in the coal purchase scam, which, he said, violated the guidelines issued by the Center.

The speaker’s offer, to take up the issue after Yeddyurappa returned from Mysore, where he was attending an Infosys function along with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, failed to pacify the JD(S) members.

Responding to JD(S) allegations, speaker Jagadish Shettar criticised Revanna saying: “It seems you are not interested in any debate. You are only interested in making allegations against the chief minister. I have expunged all your remarks.”

The speaker’s remarks triggered JD(S) members, who rushed to the well in protest of the ruling.
