Delhi Slum Fire Kills One, 300 Shanties Gutted

A 32-year-old man was killed and four others suffered burns as a fire broke out in the Sadar Bazar area of north Delhi Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Babloo Mondal while at least two of the injured – Lallan (23) and Jamal (30) are reported to have suffered 90 percent burns.

According to reports citing local police officials 25 fire tenders were pressed in to service to douse the flames that were first reported at around 0300 hours on Monday. Some 300 shanties were gutted in the incident, leaving scores of people homeless.

The other injured were identified as Kajal (28), Rakesh (18) and Lallan (23).

The Sadar Bazar police have registered a case of negligence and investigations are underway to ascertain the cause behind the fire.

Some other reports had put the death toll in the incident at four.
