Declare ‘Aila’ A National Calamity: Yechury

Top Communist Party of India – Marxist leader and parliamentarian Sitaram Yechury on Sunday urged the center to declare cyclone Aila, which devastated many areas in West Bengal recently, a “national calamity”.

In Kolkata to attend the CPI(M) State Committee meeting, Yechury questioned that if the Kosi river flood in Bihar could be declared a national calamity by the Centre, why not Aila in West Bengal.

Raising the red flag over the gravity of the situation in cyclone hit areas, Yechury informed that all Left 31 MPs contributed a month’s salary to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for rehabilitation, restoration and reconstruction work in the devastated areas.

He, along with another CPI(M) MP Bacudeb Acharia, handed over cheques worth Rs 4.5 lakh raised by the Left Front MPs to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
