Death Toll Reaches to 72 in Gujarat Hooch Tragedy

Death toll in Gujarat hooch tragedy has gone up to 72 with state government having already ordered judicial probe into the incidence.

The cases of death after taking illicit liquor were first reported on Tuesday from Majoor Gam area. Later, Odhav area also recorded hooch death.

The prime suspect in the hooch tragedy Harishankar Kahar was arrested on Wednesday night. Kahar alias Hariom, allegedly supplied spurious liquor in the Majoor Gam and Odhav areas.

In the wake of incidence, state BJP government came under attack from various quarters and the Congress party called for a bandh in Odhav, Ahmedabad.

Following the tragedy which sparked of protests, there is demand that government crack down on illegal liquor dens. The Congress party rocked state assembly on the issue insisting that Home Minister Amit Shah step down.

Shah had on Wednesday announced the formation of a enquiry commission headed by Retd High Court Justice Kamal Mehta to probe into the hooch tragedy and the report has to be submitted by November 30, 2009.

Meanwhile, several others are still undergoing treatment. And six police officials including have been suspended and transfered in wake of the deaths.
