Death Toll in Chambal Bridge Collapse Rises to 45

The death toll in bridge collapse in Rajasthan has gone up to 45 and rescue divers are still struggling to recover bodies feared trapped under rubbles, said official.

“At least 45 people are presumed to have died in the bridge collapse,” senior police official Rajeev Dasot was quoted as saying by AFP, raising the estimated death toll from 17.

The incident occurred on Friday morning when an under construction bridge over the Chambal river in Rajasthan collapsed. The site of accident is situated nearly 350 kms from Jodhpur.

Local officials said that South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and Gammon India have been jointly constructing the bridge since 2007.

“A police case has been registered against the two companies for negligence,” said senior police official Rajiv Dasot.

An inquiry has been ordered into the incidence and two engineers working on the project have been detained by the police.
