Danny Boyle Moves Slumdogs off Mumbai Streets
Directing yet another sterling performance away from the arc lights Slumdog Millionaire’ director Danny Boyle sprang nearly 2 million Indian rupees to buy a new apartment for child star Azhar Ismail after a municipal demolition drive left him homeless in heartless Mumbai.
Boyle, who plucked Ismail, 10, and his co-star Rubina Ali, nine, from the streets of Mumbai, had set up the Jai Ho trust to fund their education last year.
Boyle and producer Christian Colson flew into Mumbai this week to see how they could help the young stars, after media reports of the demolition of the shanty homes made international headlines.
Boyle also plans to put a roof over Rubina’s head.
“The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust,” said Boyle while announcing the purchase.
