CPI-Maoists or Front Group Triggered Gyaneshwari Derailment: PC

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that CPI-Maoists or front organizations of CPI-Maoists could be behind derailment of Gyaneshwari Express in West Bengal last week, said media reports.

“The needle of suspicion in the attack on the Gyaneshwari Express in West Bengal points to the CPI-Maoists or a front organization for the CPI-Maoists,” the minister was quoted as saying.

In derailment of the express train, over 140 passengers were killed last week and many more injured.

Chidambaram’s statement is in contradiction of what Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

She had said that there was no proof that the Maoists were involved in the attack on the Gyaneshwari Express, said reports.

Banerjee has asked for a CBI probe into the attack, said reports.

Senior West Bengal police officers have said that early leads suggest the Maoists were responsible for the tragedy.
