From facing backlash on social media to apologising for the distasteful tweet, a lot has happened for Vivek Oberoi in the last 24 hours. The Saathiya actor found himself at the heart of a storm when he tweeted a crass meme about Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s age-old affair back in 2002, and compared it to the ongoing elections. Now Omung Kumar, the director of Vivek’s upcoming PM Narendra Modi biopic, opened up on the entire controversy and said that he did not find the meme funny. In an interview to a website, Omung said, “I did not find it funny. There is nothing funny about it. But wrong judgement ho gaya, wo ho jata hai. Isse zyada disastrous things hue hain. This is nothing much.” The filmmaker said that it was an error of judgement on part of Vivek. “Delete kar diya, apologise kar diya, by mistake ho gaya. It was a mazaak, it happened in a wrong way. Sometimes you think it’s funny and you should share it par kisi ko funny lagta hai toh kisi ko nahi lagta hai. People objected to it and he deleted it…sorry bol raha hai. There is nothing big about it…ho gaya, ho gaya. People laughed at the meme when they saw it…agar koi [object] kar deta hai toh wrong lagta hai. (He made a mistake. He deleted the meme and also apologised for the same. It was a joke that happened in a worng way. He found the meme to be funny, but it’s not necessary that everyone feels the same. People objected to it and he deleted it. There is nothing big about it.)” When asked if it was a mistake on Vivek’s part, Omung Kumar said, “That I can’t say. It’s his prerogative. I am no one to judge. If I pass a judgement, I will also become a target of trolls.” It all began after Vivek Oberoi shared a viral meme that draws comparison between poll results and Aishwarya Rai’s personal life. The Krrish 3 actor brought up the fact that Aishwarya had once dated Salman Khan (calling it opinion poll), but later moved onto him (exit poll) and finally settled down with Abhishek Bachchan (the end result). Soon netizens and celebrities bashed Vivek for digging up Aishwarya and Salman’s affair. Sonam Kapoor slammed him saying that it was “disgusting and classless”. Urmila Matondkar lashed out saying that he should remove the tweet, if not apologise to Aishwarya and her daughter Aaradhya. If public shaming wasn’t enough, Vivek landed in more trouble after National Commision For Women issued a legal notice to him for his crass tweet. Viviek, finally, apologised for his tweet saying that “he cannot even think of being disrespectful to any woman ever.” He wrote, “Sometimes what appears to be funny and harmless at first glance to one, may not be so to others. I have spent the last 10 years empowering more than 2000 underprivileged girls, I cant even think of being disrespectful to any woman ever.”
