Congress Offers Single Seat to NCP in Gujarat

Nipping off Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar’s aspirations of piggy-back riding to pan-Indian presence, the Congress on Wednesday offered the NCP a single seat in Gujarat against the seven demanded by the party.

The move is likely to result in fresh seat-sharing skirmishes in the UPA, and could even break the Congress’ pre-poll canter that was beginning to gather strength with alliance partner NCP firm by its side after efforts to cobble support failed for the party in almost all of north India.

“We have asked NCP to select a seat either from Surat or Rajkot,” an unnamed party functionary was quoted as saying by agencies on Wednesday, barely hours after the two parties amicably split between them the two parliamentary segments in the coastal state of Goa.

It is for them to decide as the our party is in the process of selection of candidates for the remaining three Lok Sabha seats of Surat, Rajkot and Ahmedabad (west) before the declaration of notification of the election commission on Thursday, Congress sources were reported as saying by media reports.

The Congress has already declared nominees for 23 of the total 26 parliamentary segments in Gujarat.

The BJP has already named 25 and is still to declare the party candidate for the Jnagadh constituency.

Gujarat goes to polls on April 30.
