Congress MPs to Bat for ‘Dalit’ Dinakaran: Reports
In contrast to a campaign launched by the Opposition MPs to impeach Justice PD Dinakaran – the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court – several Congress parliamentarians are opposed to the move which they suspect to be a rooted in an anti-Dalit mindset, say media reports.
On Monday, 76 Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha submitted a petition seeking Dinakaran’s impeachmentto Chairman Hamid Ansari.
Dinakaran is accused of land-grabbing and amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.
The reports cite Congress MPs to say that the impeachment move was a ploy to stonewall Dinakaran’s promotion as the country’s second Dalit Chief Justice after KG Balakrishnan.
Amid reports of the Congress MPs plan to mobilise Dalit parliamentarians against the impeachment process Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi earlier told a television news channel that the party had issued a diktat on the issue and that each MP was free to decide on his own.
