Cong to Contest Bihar Assembly Polls Independently

Negating possibilities of a u-turn in the run up to the Bihar assembly elections later this year, the Congress party will contest the polls ‘on its own.’

“Congress workers will fight for the rights of the people without fear and bring change in Bihar. Congress will contest on its own,” said AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi in Bettiah on Monday. The Amethi MP is currently on a two-day visit to the state.

He stressed that party tickets would only be given to those championing the cause of the common man.

Exhorting youth to join politics, he cited lack of political interest in youngsters as a reason for the state’s poor performance on the development index. He was addressing students at the Lalit Narayan Mitihila University in Darbhanga.

The Congress had earlier broken off its alliance with the Lalu Prasad led RJD and Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP after fissures appeared over seat sharing, ahead of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. But the onset of the assembly elections had triggered speculations of a possible re-alliance between the former partners.
