Cong-NCP Fail to Seal Gujarat Deal

A day after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said “single handed dominance of the Congress was over” the NCP on Sunday refused to accept the Congress offer of contesting a single seat in Gujarat and said it would now contest 18 Lok Sabha segments in the state.

Jayant Patel, the NCP Gujarat unit chief said: “I will formally announce my candidature from Anand on Monday and other candidates will do so too,” he said that the decision was unavoidable and important to maintain the morale of party workers in the state.

A source in the party said it was imperative for it to contest a respectable number of seats to maintain the morale of its workers in the state.

The Congress had earlier offered the NCP a single seat in the state as part of a seat sharing formula worked out by it against an original NCP demand for eight seats.

Reacting to the NCP decision, Congress spokesman Arjun Modhwadia said: “This is unfortunate as we are an alliance at the national level,” but added that the Congress prospects will not be affected.
