A senior Congress leader said that in at least 10 of the 48 constituencies, NCP either supported rival candidate or did not participate wholeheartedly in the campaign.

Quickly rubbishing the charge, NCP general secretary Gurunath Kulkarni said that the allegations were fabricated.

“In each of the three phases, our party leaders have campaigned for the Congress-NCP alliance as a whole,” he said.

Chief minister Ashok Chavan said that the Congress-NCP-RPI alliance was forged to face the elections unitedly, adding that it would be clear after the election results if the parties gave each other company.

“We have not ditched them (Congress). Senior party leaders including Sharad Pawar, R R Patil and Chhagan Bhujbal actively campaigned for the alliance candidates,” Kulkarni said.

It should be noted that constituencies where Congress feels that NCP worked against party candidates’ interests include Pune, Mumbai North-Central and Sangli
