Civil Nuke Bill Likely to Be Introduced in LS on Monday

The government is expected to introduce the controversial Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill in the Lok Sabha, said media reports.

“We will most likely introduce the Bill on Monday. There’s no plan to hold it back,” Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, in-charge of Atomic Energy, Prithviraj Chavan was quoted as saying.

Lok Sabha is likely to go for break after Tuesday, a day before the schedule, said reports.

So government wants to bring the bill in a hurry, which is also ahead of US President Barack Obama’s expected India -visit in mid-2010.

Since both the Left and the BJP are opposed to the Nuclear Liability Bill, it will most certainly be referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy. The energy panel of Parliament, incidentally, is headed by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
