AIDS patients are increasing rapidly in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, Nov 14 (PTI):  With 3415 people testing positive for HIV till September-end this year, as compared to 2119 cases in 2006. AIDS cases are on the rise in Madhya Pradesh,

An official of Madhya Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (MPSACS) told PTI, “AIDS was on the rise in Madhya Pradesh and it is disturbing that the youth were falling prey to it.”

Till the end of September of this year around 3415 people have been tested positive for the HIV. Indore is on the top in the state with more than 660 people testing positive for the disease, according to MPSACS figures.

There has been a sharp rise in AIDS cases, since 1996, official figures reveal. Indore is followed by Bhopal 372, Jabalpur 311, Ujjain 228, Rewa 205, Mandsaur 142, Gwalior 122, Burhanpur 105 and others districts.

In 1966, 96 AIDS cases were reported, 177 in 1997, 258 in 1998, 376 in 1999, 462 in 2000, 527 in 2001, 1032 in 2002, 1030 in 2003, 1227 in 2004, 1759 in 2005, 2119 in 2006 and 3270 in 2007.The first AIDS case was detected in the state back in 1988.

As said by the MPSACS official, besides the youth, who are most vulnerable to AIDS, homosexuals and female sex workers too were being affected by the disease.
