Chawla Assumes Office Today
Navin Chawla has assumed office of Chief Election Commisisoner of India on Tuesday, succeeding his preceding CEC N Gopalaswamy, who had earlier commended his removal from the commission. Chawla has faced controversies during his stint as Election Commissioner.
Chawla takes over a day before the second phase of Lok Sabha elections and is the first CEC to take over in the midst of a Lok Sabha election.
His promotion has come soon after a controversy triggered by former CEC N Gopalaswami’s recommendation to the President for his removal from office for alleged partisan functioning.
Gopalaswamy believed he did right in asking the President to dismiss Chawla.
